10! 9! 8! 7! 6! 5! 4! 3! 2! 1! HAPPY NEW YEAR! It comes every year, and you have decided to be the life of the party by volunteering to have the party. You have many options to choose from.
Will you “rock and roll all night”? Sure, it’s frivolous, but it’s definitely fun that anyone of any age can enjoy? Any food you serve should be something that is simple and easy to quickly pick up and eat. Foods like chips and dip, pretzels, hot dogs, mini candy bars, and hamburgers are all good ideas. Don’t forget, while you’ll need plenty of champagne for the adults to toast with, you’ll also need some sparkling cider so the kids can join in too. Pro tip: leave the trash can in a place that is very easy to see and access to encourage the guests to use it while they are there. To pass the time, play twister, board games, have card tournaments and of course watch Dick Clarks’ New Year’s Rockin Eve with Ryan Seacrest. One fun thing to do is to leave disposable cameras in random places just to see what kind of pictures people take during your party.
You might prefer to run a sophisticated dinner party for a few of your close friends instead? A great way to contribute to the mood is through warm candlelight combined with smooth Jazz. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself to prepare a several course meal. With so much time to work with, why not have the full series; appetizers, cocktails, soups and salads, the main course, and dessert! If you do go for it all, don’t forget to use a palate cleanser between courses, perhaps something like sorbet. Drinks can be whatever guests prefer, just make sure that if you serve wine with dinner it fits well with the entree and that you have Champagne on hand for the New Year’s toast. Oh! And it goes almost without saying that you’ll want to watch the ball drop, even if only to get that midnight kiss.

Invitations should be sent out nearly 3 weeks in advance just to make sure that people get your invitation before they settle into other plans for New Year’s Eve. Trust your instincts when it comes to whether or not you should buy special paper or make due with what you have.
- Favors. You probably had no idea that there are free templates for practically any party favor you can think of that are just an internet search away? You can print out party hats, foldable favor bags, novelty candy bar wrappers, 2011 silly glasses that your guests can wear and yes even wraps for noisemakers to ring in the New Year. A couple specialized printer supplies might be required, but it will be worth it in the end!
- If the formal dinner soiree is more your style, with the right printer supplies, you can print place cards, dinner menus, napkin wraps, champagne bottle wrappers and even flute glass charms.
– Decorations can be very simple; create small 8 1/2 X 11 mini-posters to hang that say “Happy New Year 2011″! Or, by using Microsoft Word, you could spell out “Happy New Year 2011″ over several sheets of paper, even as large as one letter per sheet. Then you could connect them, either as they are or by cutting them out first, and you’ll have a homemade New Year’s decoration!
