You should enjoy the arts and crafts you do with your kids. Crafting is supposed to be a fun, messy time when your kids make something out of nothing and you get to be creative. This time is important to your child’s development because they get to expand on their creative ideas. Alot of adults find craft time quite stressful for them. They’re worried about messes and everybody getting along. They will of course stress over whether the project is right for the group of kids they’ve chosen it for.

They worry about being able to find the right supplies (like left handed scissors). Read on for more tips on how to have a happier craft time.

Where ever you’ll be crafting, you need to take measures to avoid any damage. So that simply means to lay down something to protect the floor or table and other furniture. That will also shave some time off when you’re cleaning up afterwards. Have you ever lost something and found it months later under the sofa? Well, doing that will help prevent something such as the left-handed scissors getting lost forever. It will be a lot easier to keep track of where everything is and your kids will learn to be careful, as well. There are time savings involved, and that is what it’s all about; a little here, and a little there. Try to do your crafts in a big enough room. More space to move around in. Sometimes right and left-handed children working together, like using left-handed scissors, will need a bit more space so they’re not clashing with elbows, etc. The extra or adequate space just lets everyone feel some freedom, plus they can more easily keep track of everything they’re using. If you are all crowded around a small table, tempers will run high and the instances of accidents will be large. More space lets people feel calm, and there will be a reduced chance of anything getting spilled, etc.

Choosing a project that is age appropriate is a very good idea. If they’re able to make the craft, or to succeed, then that will help them to feel more confident about their abilities. Try to never make them attempt anything that is truly difficult for their age because that can make them hate doing anything related to crafts in the future. But you don’t want to bore them with a project that is overy easy and simple. If this happens, just be careful that your kids are not insulted since you gave them something obviously too easy for them to do.

The fact that kids don’t care if their craft is perfect means that there is less pressure on you. Nobody expects a little kid to become Martha Stewart. Probably you will find gobs of glue in random places, stray marker scratches and bits of paper too. The sole idea of children’s craft time is just to have fun. The more fun you have while you are doing a craft, the more fun your kids will have-even the kids who complain that their left handed scissors don’t cut as well as the right handed kids’ scissors.

In America, Santa Claus has really been well-liked regardless of what state you happen to be dwelling in. The moment someone dons that red and white outfit, other individuals regardless of how innocuous they may be can certainly identify who that individual is portraying. Indeed, Father Christmas has become a universal icon.

Virtually any man dressed in a red and white Santa costume can sooth misbehaving kids, create havoc in department stores and keep young children alert and peering out their own bedroom windows till the early hours of the night.  Even NASA has a site that allows youngsters everywhere accross the planet to track Santa on his yearly trip.

Therefore , it is concluded that everybody loves Santa. However, many people are baffled why there are certain individuals putting on the Santa Claus costume over a Hallow’s Eve holiday?

Why Portray Santa on a Halloween Costume Party?

It’s true that we now have a number of people portraying the image of Santa Claus, not on a Christmas Party but on a Halloween. These types of incidences have affected individuals who have so much regard for Santa. The idea that the red and white costume is worn over a Halloween celebration is very disrespectful as per the fans.

Now, I realize that people are usually busy and planning for a Halloween costume does not reach the top of everyone’s “to do” list, but Santa Claus? That choice just shouts desperate to me.  If you want to dress up in the Santa costume, wait until December and offer to help at a homeless shelter or neighborhood kids club; keep out of the actual Halloween parties.

Never Wear the Red and White Wardrobe on Costume Parties

You have to acknowledge that it can cause you to feel good witnessing Santa Claus getting a lot of gifts for the youngsters, as well as seeing him journey on his reindeer. On the other hand, that great feeling will certainly transform into some thing “immoral” once you discover Santa positioned next to those frightening figures such as Frankenstein or Dracula

Therefore, it is strongly advised to thwart portraying Santa Claus during Halloween seasons to avoid any unfavorable feedbacks from the people. In addition, Santa Claus’ appearance should always occur on Christmas seasons just like the old days.

Grandparents can play a key role in encouraging creativity in their grandkids by providing them with the time, resources and the space for simply making art.When your grandchildren come to visit you, set aside some interruption-free quiet time for drawing, in a mess-proof zone – so that their creativity can run wild. Cover all surfaces so that any splashed paint or scribbles of crayon are 'caught' - because nothing quells creativity more so than a Nanna or Pop repeating "Don't make a mess" every 2 minutes!

Choose the right drawing materials too as this is very important. Many craft materials can be improvised, think of decorated kitchen roll tubes and potatoes as stamps, but when drawing tools and paper are required, opt for a small selection of good quality age-appropriate products, rather than loads of inferior products. Be sure to check safety information and follow instructions. During any ‘art-time’ children should always be surpervised because many necessary materials – such as crayons – pose a choking hazard.

Surroundings: As with writing or working at a computer, good posture and a comfortable position are important for drawing. With young children, a child-size table and chair is actually preferable to an easel. If the chair is a little high, provide a phone book for a footrest. A coffee table and an inexpensive plastic chair work well. A small kitchen storage trolley is ideal for containing supplies, or if space does not permit, a portable tackle box is a good option too. Untidy toddlers may need a drop-cloth and supervision to avoid ink-stained walls, as even ‘washable’ pens often don’t deliver on that promise!

Art Materials: Avoid cheap markers, too-hard pencils and thin paints – these types of materials are discouraging to the child and therefore a waste of money. Provide many sheets of blank paper to inspire their crativity and occasionally invest in a canvas so that your child can paint something and chances are you’ll want to hang it on your wall! Provide also coloring books or coloring pages which are bountiful online – coloring pages are not so great for creativity, however they do provide children with the chance to practice their fine motor skills and sometimes it’s very relaxing and just what they need to simply color in without the ‘pressure’ of thinking about WHAT to draw.

Nothing much has changed since your children (their parents) were small – little boys still  typically enjoy coloring pictures of cars and trucks while little girls may enjoy coloring images of Barbie and at sites like Barbie Coloring Pages you’ll find the best Barbie coloring pictures.

If you are surprising expectant parents at a baby shower or with a nice memorable gift for baby, you will surely find enough choices to make your basket a sentimental favorite. The best new baby gift baskets are customized.

For purchasing the right items find out as much information as possible about the baby. If it is an expectant birth, try to find out the gender. That will help you pick the colors. Colors for boys are typically blue and pink for girls. A general rule of thumb is, if you don’t know the sex of the baby, stick with yellow.

If you decide that you would like to try your hand at creating a gift basket yourself, remember that the best baby gift baskets consist of not only items that the baby will like, such as toys, but also items that will be of genuine use to the parents. A good place to start with making your basket it to decide on a color scheme and work from there.

If you want to jazz up your baby basket, you can always decide on using a theme. If you’re having trouble thinking of one, you might try something like “music.” A music-themed basket is great because you can include lots of goodies like musical toys and CD’s. Many babies find music very soothing, and it just might save the parents a bit of sanity to have some baby music on hand!

With a baby gift basket, you really can’t go wrong. Most people find that the best way to fill a basket with useful stuff is by asking the parents what they need for the baby or what things they replace often (items like diapers and wipes go quickly, so it could be a big help for the parents to receive some back-up packs!).

Whether you decide to purchase your basket or make one yourself, the new parents and baby are sure to enjoy the thought you will have put into giving such a unique and charming gift.

The birth or adoption of a new baby is a joyous occasion. There are many different ways that the celebration of this new life coming into a family can take place. Often, before the baby is born, friends and family members gather together to throw a baby shower. Baby gift baskets are the perfect choice for such events because you can custom make or order a custom made basket that is designed specifically with the baby and mom in mind.

Newborn baby gift baskets are usually designed so that every piece of the basket makes up a useful gift for the baby and mom. Cloth diapers, safety pins, baby lotion, baby oil, baby powder, thermometers and many other baby blankets are typical contents in these thoughtful baskets. With such a clever gift, one stop shopping makes it convenient and unique to present one of these baby gift baskets at a baby shower.

Of course, there are plenty of other special occasions that call for a unique gift basket, such as a baptism or a christening. The wonderful thing about this gift is that no part will go to waste. Baskets can always be used around the house, but a gift basket isn’t limited to a simple basket—anything can be used. Some gift baskets even consist of little wooden wagons or baby furniture which are filled with items.

Due to the absolute diversity of what can be included in a gift basket, there is the boundless chance to be creative and unique with every gift basket you select. If you are good with crafts and enjoy giving home-made gifts, why not try your hand at creating a basket yourself? Picking each item yourself may give you more freedom if the new baby has special requirements or if the parents are short on certain items. Usually the best baby gift baskets contain either helpful or unique items.

Baby gift baskets can be given for any occasion or just because. New babies have lots of needs when it comes to items such as receiving blankets, disposable diapers, pacifiers, undershirts and pajamas. All these things can make up a really great gift basket for baby at any time.

Choosing The Best Baby Gift

Are you or someone you know expecting a baby sometime soon? Why not let your gift stand out from every other gift at the baby shower? Baby gift baskets make excellent presents both before and after a baby’s arrival, and they can be totally unique or as “neutral” as you wish, making them great for all types of pregnancy, whether the parents have decided to learn the gender or not. So, how can you obtain a baby gift basket?

There are really two options for giving a gift basket. You can either make a basket yourself, your you can purchase one. Whichever option you choose, you want to make sure that the basket it unique! When you purchase a gift basket from a local shop, you always stand a chance of giving a duplicate basket that someone else at the shower may give. If you buy a baby gift basket, it’s a good idea to purchase one off the internet, where you are more likely to find a unique gift.

When making the new baby gift basket yourself, there are many things you can include in the basket. You could create a “bath-time basket” that includes a rubber play duck, wash cloths, soap, shampoo, diaper rash cream, and even a baby robe! Be sure to find out what the baby’s gender is if the parents have chosen to find out and tell others, but you may want to keep the receipts for items that are gender-specific in case the baby turns out to be the opposite gender. You also don’t have to stick to an actual basket. You can use a little mini toy-box, a re-useable plastic bucket or box (which will be great for storing anonymous baby things in the future!), as well as a Moses basket stuffed with goodies.

The recipient of the baby gift baskets should find them useful and valuable. Some of the best baby gift baskets out there contain nursery room accessories, such as mobiles, music, CD’s full of nursery rhymes, changing mats, and even some of the bigger items such as furniture. You may even come across feeding bottles, bibs, spoons, infant cups, pacifiers, rattles and teethers. Whatever you do, make sure the newborn baby gift basket contains items suitable for the baby.

Gel candles last longer than standard was candles. Gel candles, depending on size, will burn upwards of 200 hours.

In terms of making your own gel candles the value is amazing. The gel wax is the most expensive item on the list. Containers for the candles can be found everywhere from thrift stores to your own cupboards. All that is necessary is that the glass be thick enough not to crack from the heat of the candle.

Here to Stay

Gel candles are not a fad that is going to disappear overnight. Their unique designs make them more than a passing fancy. Couple that with the simplicity of making them and you have a recipe for a successful product for many years to come.

How to Make Gel Candles

Gel candles are easy to make and beautiful to give. Their popularity couple with the ease of making them has made the hobby a second income for many stay at home moms and even crafters looking for that a unique product .

Before you start making your gel candles, do your research and find a reputable supplier of gel wax.  It is the most important ingredient in your candles and should be your highest priority. Local craft stores may not carry a high quality gel so check before you spend money on an inferior product that ruins your candle making effort.

A word about embeds before starting. Embeds are part of what makes gel candles unique. From fish aquarium scenes to seashells suspended in air, embeds are the icing on the cake. You can’t use just any object in your candle due to it melting. Ceramic, glass, wax molded figures, pewter, and glitter. The basic rule of thumb is anything that is non-flammable can be used as an embed.

How to Make Gel Candles

Assemble Your Ingredients and Tools

Gather all your tools in one central location to make it easier for you to work. Preferably you will want to be near your heat source. This could be your kitchen or a room with a hotplate. Do not use the microwave for melting your gel. It can catch fire if it reaches its flashpoint and it needs to be a precise temperature for making candles.

You will need:

* Large glass measuring container – this is used to pour your melted wax into your containers;
* Heat Source or Electric Presto Kettle: Use to melt your gel;
* Thermometer: Your gel has to be melted to 225°F, candy thermometers work great;
* Metal Utensil: Do not stir your gel with wooden utensils, this causes bubbles;
* Skewers: Metal, for positioning and moving your embedded objects;
* Glass Containers: These are your candle containers; they can be mugs, champagne flutes, votive cups, and more. The only requirement is that it not be made of a burnable or meltable material;
* Gel: candle gel wax in the density required for your project, the higher density gels are used for candles that will contain embeds. Lower density gels are great for plain, scented candles.
* Fragrance Oils: These must be made for gel candles and have a flashpoint of 170°F.
* Liquid or color block dye: Again, make sure it is appropriate for gel candles. Do not use cloth dye, crayons or food coloring.
* Embeds: Use your imagination
* Candle Wicks – you should use pre-tabbed pre-waxed wicks for the best outcome.

Let’s Get Started

Now that you’ve got all your supplies gathered, let’s have some fun. Remember that you are only limited by your imagination. Each candle is a work of art that is unique to you the maker or the person you are making it for. Follow these simple steps to make your masterpieces.

1. Melt Gel: Use your candy thermometer to maintain and reach the desired temperature of 225°F. If you are using a glass cup for melting, put it in your oven to melt it. The Presto Pot is great but don’t rely on the gauge, use a thermometer. The gel will take a little while to melt. While it is doing so, you can move on to other steps.
2. Wash your container and dry them thoroughly. There should not be any residue or oils to cloud your candle gel wax.
3. Assemble your embeddable objects and your wicks and have them near your containers.
4. After your wax is melted: If you are going to color your wax, use a toothpick to add a small amount of color. Stir well and drip a small amount on a piece of white paper to see the result. If you are adding fragrance add it now as well.
5. Secure your wick to the bottom of your container with a small dab of hot glue. Try not to use too much hot glue as it can make your candle murky.
6. Fill your containers partially with hot wax.
7. Add your embeds as desired, using your metal skewers to position them where you want them.
8. Top off the container with wax.
9. Allow to gel.
10. Trim wick to 1/4” from top.

Bubble Tips

To avoid bubbles, stir gel slowly and pour gel slowly. This will take practice. If you see a lot of bubbles after pouring you can use a heat gun to remove them. If they appear after the candle has settled you can put the candle in a warm oven to remove them.  Bubbles can be decorative if you are making a champagne or aquarium candle.

Gel candles are a simple, inexpensive means of letting your creative juices flow. Sharing your talent with friends and family makes gift giving that much more meaningful, and who knows your idea for a candle might just be the next product that takes the world by storm.

Gel Candle Making

Gel candle making has enjoyed a surge in popularity in the past few years. It is easier than traditional candle making, requiring few ingredients and some simple instructions. The hardest decisions are ones based on personal taste: what kind of container do you want to use, do you want to add color to your gel and what scent do you want to use.

Gel wax has greatly changed the world of candle making. With its transparency the possibilities are limited only by your imagination and the speed with which it sets makes producing large numbers of candles less time consuming than with traditional candles.

Making gel candles uniquely individual is one of the most appealing aspects of the process. The only thing that has to be taken into consideration is that containers must be used, unless of course the time is taken to make unique molds as well.

Gel candles can be made using seashells from vacations, coins from travels around the world, even beer cap collections can be used to make personalized candles.  They can be tinted using dyes and scented using fragrant oils.

Materials

Before you begin making the candles you need to assemble your materials. The most expensive part of the process is the gel wax itself. You will need:

  •
  • Gel wax
  •
  • Glass containers – use your imagination, shot glasses, martini glasses, fish bowls;
  •
  • Fragrant oils – if you want to add scent;
  •
  • Dye – if you want your candles colored;
  •
  • Wick – the length of which is determined by the height of your container; use wax coated wicks for gel candles, not paper wicks.
  •
  • Décor for putting in the candle if desired.

You should also have a pot or kettle to melt and pour the gel from. Camping equipment is an excellent place to find a sturdy kettle to use. It will stand up to the repeated heating.

Making Your Candles

First you need to make sure that your containers are very clean and dry. Any residue or foreign materials that remain inside the container can cause your gel wax not to set properly.

You will need to melt you gel; however, you must keep an eye on the gel as it is melting as it can reach its flash point very quickly and be on fire before you know it. Using a thermometer is the best way to insure that you don’t exceed the recommended temperature. Also, do not under any circumstances whatsoever melt the gel in the microwave, it is very dangerous.

If you are going to color your gel you can do this after the gel has melted. Test the color by pouring a small spoon of it on a sheet of white paper, if the color is darker than you want it, add more gel, if it is lighter than you want it, add more dye.

This is also the time to add fragrant oil if you want to make scented candles. Again, add more if you aren’t satisfied with the odor and if it has too much smell add more gel to the mix.

You are now ready to position your wick. The method you use will depend on how precise you want your candles to be. If you are giving them for gifts and don’t want bubbles, you will want to use the pencil method. If you are making them for yourself and don’t mind some bubbles use the easier, hot glue method.

The hot glue method entails using hot glue to secure the wick to the bottom center of the container. As the wax is poured in, it will react with the glue and cause some bubbles.

The pencil method requires filling the container with wax, dipping the wick in the wax, removing the excess wax from the wick and rolling it around a pencil. Position the pencil over the container with the wick in the center and dropping it down into the gel. When the gel cools cut the wick no longer than ¼ inch.

If you are adding embellishments to your gel candle you should dip them in wax and arrange them in the container before you pour the wax in the container. You should also arrange them closer to the outer edge to make them visible.

Enjoy

Once your candles set you are now ready to enjoy your candles. Gel candle making is not a difficult process and can make beautiful gifts to share with your friends and family, during holidays or just because you want to share your newfound talent.

Gel Candle Recipe: Gel Wedding Candles

Gel candles are simple to make and wonderful to give as gifts. The beauty in them is that you can make them to suite any occasion or taste. By using various glass containers, trinkets added to the candle for décor and varying the scent each candle can be individualized to the recipient. Recipes for making gel candles are simple to arrive at. A wedding gel candle recipe is listed here to get you started, once you see how easy personalizing them can be you’ll be creating your own recipes in no time at all.

Basics

The basis for all of the gel candles includes the following items:

  • Candle gel
  • Wicks – preferably coated as they are easier to work with
  • Scissors for trimming the wick
  • Accessories as listed in the recipes

Bride and Groom Candles

Give the bride and groom a set of matching candles made using champagne flutes. Add a light scent and color that corresponds to the wedding color to make them even more special. If you prefer to have the candle colored more like champagne, use a pale yellow color. Items Needed:

  • Champagne flutes – plain or inscribed with “Bride” and “Groom”
  • If desired, small bride and groom figurine, small ceramic wedding bells, or other wedding celebration accessories you would like to add. Make sure any items you choose are ceramic.
  • Fragrant oil for scenting the candle, if desired.
  • Lace or ribbon for decoration

Instructions

  • Secure the wick to the bottom of the champagne flute using hot glue.
  • If using coloring or scented oil place in gel as it melts.
  • Fill the flute partially with gel.
  • Place the bride figurine in one flute, the groom in the other flute – if using inscribed flutes, make sure the bride is in the bride flute and the groom is in the groom flute.
  • Continue filling with gel until approximately ¼ inch from rim.
  • When gel sets, trim wick to approximately ¼”.
  • Tie a pretty ribbon or lace bow around the base of the flute.

Variations

  • Instead of using a bride and groom, add plastic wedding bells as you fill the flute. Alternate layers of wedding bells and gel until you reach the top; or,
  • Use artificial flower petals that represent the bouquet carried by the bride.

These flutes make great keepsakes to remind your favorite couple of their special day.

Simplicity

This gel candle recipe is just the beginning of the ideas you can come up with. From fish aquarium candles to fruit jars, your only limit is your imagination. Once you know how to make a basic gel candle the fun has just begun.

Gel Candle Supplies

Gel candle making is a great hobby and can be a way to make extra money. Making gel candles is a relatively simple process once you have some basic instructions and gel candle supplies. Finding supplies shouldn’t be hard; you can either order them from the Internet or visit your local craft store. Some supplies can even be found in thrift stores, once you know what it is you need.

Basic Supplies

Candle Gel

Candle gel is the basis for your candles and comes in three types CLP, CMP, and CHP.

CLP is a low density gel that work well for light to medium scented candles. It is useful for making plain candles that are not going to have embellishments added to the gel and only a light scent.

CMP is a medium density gel that is slightly thicker which gives it the ability to hold more fragrant oil for a stronger scent.

CHP is the heaviest of the gels therefore it will hold the most scent and should be used if your plan on adding embellishments to your candles. It also takes the longest to melt.

Candle gel is more expensive than standard paraffin wax for making wax candles. If you are planning to make a lot of candles it is best to purchase the gel in bulk.

Equipment

The equipment needed for candle making is essentially the container for melting the wax. You can use a specialty cook pot like the Presto Kitchen Kettle or a metal pan used for camping, it all depends on how much money you want to spend.

No matter what pot you use you should also get a thermometer. You should get one that clips to the side of the pot without touching the bottom (like a candy thermometer). Digital Alarm thermometers are great because they will alert you when the set temperature is reached; this allows you to be working on other aspects of your candle making.

Glass, heat resistant measuring cup (such as Pyrex) for scooping out and pouring the gel into your containers.

Metal stirrers, you can use a long metal spoon, or very hard plastic spoon, even knitting needle work well. Do not use wooden utensils as they cause bubbles to get in the gel.

Dyes

The beauty in gel candles is their translucency so any dye used should maintain that effect. Liquid dyes work best and it only takes a very small amount. The dye should be made for candles as other dyes will not burn properly. Do not use crayons, cloth dye, food coloring or soap dyes. You will ruin your candles.

Dye also comes in chips, buds, flakes, and solids. Be careful using these as it is easy to overpower your candle.

Fragrance

Choosing your fragrance is extremely important, this cannot be emphasized enough. Fragrant oils must be non-polar and have a flash point over 170.  To insure that you are using the proper fragrant oil, purchase it from a gel candle supplier or craft store. If it does not say “gel safe”, ask for the MSDS sheet and look for the flash point.

Wicking

Choosing your wick is important in order to maintain a small, steady flame. Zinc core wicks work well with gel candles, as do Gelwick™, a wick designed for use with Penreco’s gel. Most people also tend to go one size larger in diameter with gel candles because the gel burns slower.

Wax coated wicks should be avoided. When the gel and the wick come in contact the gel becomes contaminated and cloudy.  If you use wax wicks they should say impregnated not coated. This lessens the chance of clouding the gel.

Embeds

Embeds or decorative items put in gel candles must be non-flammable. The perfect embeds are seashells, glass items, marbles, stones, ceramic materials, and wax items. You should not put resin or plastic s, potpourri or dried fruit as they are not safe. Sand can be used on the bottom but do not let the wick burn all the way to the sand.

If you have an embed that you truly must use but it is on the unsafe list, you can use the double glass method. Put the item in a glass bowl and then put a smaller glass dish inside the larger one. Fill the outer bowl that contains the embed with unscented gel and the inner bowl with the wick and your scented gel. This keeps the flame from ever touching the embed.

Gathering supplies for your candle making should not take long. There are many websites devoted to gel candle making and many craft stores have areas devoted to the process. Of course, you can always buy a kit that has everything you need all in one place.
