Is America Ready to Change Its Course?
Now that Barack Obama and his family have occupied the White House, it will be interesting to watch whether the surge of patriotism we saw will still be alive and well in the hearts of Americans. The 2009 election was one of the most historic ever, but time will tell if that is enough to keep people rallied behind the president.
Whether people know it or not, it would be beneficial to all of us, because we’ve been divided long enough. Take for example, the plight of veterans. Many gave their youths to serving in wars and in the case of the Viet Nam war, they didn’t get the appreciation they deserved when they came back to America. That is the reason I created some free patriotic clip art that honors veterans. Using the clip art wherever veterans will see it is a small way we can show our support of them. That support just might renew the spirit of veterans feeling disenchanted with their country’s response to their military service.
But we need to do more than just send annual Memorial or Veterans Day greeting cards. The country’s support of them has to be ongoing. As fellow Americans, we owe it to them. If that support doesn’t come from us; where will it come from?
Not only veterans would benefit, however, from the unification of our country. It would be wonderful to see people saluting the American flag when on parade, because they genuinely believe in what the flag stands for. One would hope that love of country will help us unify.
But will this unity take place? Some people are already having a bad reaction to Obama’s proposed changes. But that’s to be expected. The principle is that having diverse strong opinions will keep the decision-making process balanced. At least we hope so! We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed and wait.
