Even though you are probably familiar with your siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, going further back than living relatives is much more difficult. The more relatives you know that are living the better when you design a family tree, which includes; siblings, parents, grandparents, and maybe even great-grandparents.Most of your other relatives will be cousins, aunts and uncles, but everyone else will be before your time.

Usually, the maternal line sits on even numbers, while the paternal line falls on odd numbered lines. Yes, the format can be switched but we recommend recording only one way for consistency. You should also follow the format that is used by the program, if you plan on sharing your files with others.

You don’t have to be fancy in the beginning and can just submit the basic information like; date of birth, where you were born (city, county, state), and that will be a good initiation. You can start with Census records, public forms or even church records. Things like a Census form or marriage record provide good sources for information about deceased relatives. Knowing where they lived, or were buried can also help.Be sure to check the headstone information, because it’s a very reliable source for dates of birth, when someone died, and whether or not spouses and children are next to them.
Networking is one of the best ways for modern historians to design a family tree.Everything is much easier in regards to finding information and you will come across several family connections along the way. In fact, many Internet based genealogy programs enable distantly related family members to share information and collaborate in the design of their family trees.
We can’t even begin to tell you why tracing your family tree is so much fun. It doesn’t matter why you want to design a family tree, because you will enjoy it. All it takes is doing a little research on all the reliable sources out there. Start with primary sources, adding secondary or supporting information if it is available.
