If your home is in the inner city and you have access to a little roof area, you may be able to plant a garden where most never get to grow. These areas are a unique challenge for landscaping and garden ideas because they will most likely be hammered by the wind as well as beaten by sun. Still, you can design some screening to block the wind as well as make some shade for sun protection.

The first step in planning a garden like this is to research how the building is constructed. Pay attention to what materials the roof is made of. Or if it’s a balcony, how it is put together. A balcony can be a small space. If it will have to hold a lot of potted plants, containers, and other elements, it should be able to support the weight. So that there are no leaks, the roof under small garden ideas on roofs and balconies should be completely water proof. Good drainage is also important to move excess moisture and water from the roof. if it is going to be easily accessed and enjoyed, there should be a safe way to get to the roof or balcony garden.

Around your roof garden there will likely be poles or wires. By placing the right plants in the right spots, these can easily be screened or hidden. Small planters, pots, and containers filled with flowers and plants will help make the atmosphere in the garden while bigger container plants can do the same and also create a green screen to keep out neighboring views. Be careful to not overcrowd the little bit of space that you have to work with when working with small gardens, patios, and courtyards. Be sure to plan for a little seating room where you can sit back and enjoy any views that can be saved framed rather than completely hidden from view.

Long wooden planters are preferable over using a lot of small pots as it will spread the load out more evenly. You can also add water absorbing polymer crystals to your planting mix. This will cut down on daily watering and maintenance needs as they hold moisture in the soil until plants need it and less evaporates. A hydroponics system for growing your plants might also be a good consideration if your roof is structurally not able to hold much weight. Hydroponically grown plants only need a liquid nutrient and light medium which weigh a lot less than dirt filled planters.

You may also consider raising a small worm colony in your balcony or roof garden. This can produce some rich organic soil for your plants while also cutting back on your garbage and waste.
