Celebrate July 4th in Uniquely American Style
In the U.S., the “patriotic season” begins in late May with Memorial Day and stretches out until November, when we honor our war veterans on Veterans Day. There are also other holidays in between, including Flag Day, the 4th of July and Labor Day. Those would be considered the primary patriotic holidays but there are also plenty of others. The first, Armed Forces Day, actually falls before Memorial Day. Then we have Citizenship Day and Patriot Day in September, followed by United Nations Day in October.
Many Americans take the major patriotic holidays seriously, as well as some of the minor ones. This is at least partially because so many people have veterans in their immediate families, or at least have some relationship to people who have served in the U.S. armed forces. For these people, the patriotic holidays are personal. That is probably the reason why many people now use Memorial Day graphics to send greetings that pay homage to veterans when each major patriotic holiday comes around. A simple gesture like sending a card can mean the world to someone who may feel his or her contribution to the greater good has been forgotten.
On a more upbeat note, nearly everyone in the United States loves the 4th of July. Some folks really take the holiday to heart — fireworks and all — and make a giant celebration out of it. It’s common for people to throw 4th of July BBQs, which are really just a reason to set off firecrackers and eat a lot! A common trend has been for people to make their own invitations to these parties, using contemporary 4th of July clip art or free American flags. Instead of having to buy expensive invitations with little effort they can create and print fun invites. Even those who never designed a thing can do it!
