Keeping Your Craft Area Organized
Many people give up on their crafts simply because they’re not able to create a craft work area and keep it organized. Click here for more organizing ideas for your home, office or garage. This is an even harder thing to do if you have only small space available. Choose the best from the following ideas and use them as they best work for you. Adapt them to suit your own needs and even use more than one idea together.
You must have a big enough container to hold everything for your craft. Using lots of little boxes creates even more clutter. Some crafts materials don’t take up too much space. Some crafts, like painting or small wood carvings, can be contained in small boxes; others, like large wood carving or building big model airplanes, can require a whole room to themselves. Small cabinets, particularly those with drawers attached, can fill the bill nicely. Buy these new or used, depending on your budget and taste.
If you need to move your supplies each time you want to work on your craft, look for a container with wheels. I love using clear plastic drawer units in different sizes, which I get in the hardware store.
Shelves can also convert a small area of a room into a craft corner. Just make sure you put all your supplies in good looking containers that fit the shelves. Without the boxes, the shelves will look untidy.
Best location for your crafting area
Again, this can depend on what your craft or hobby is. Big model aircraft, for example, need a whole room. Don’t try to cram this type of activity into a small corner, or you’ll give up in frustration.
With some other crafts, you’ll just need a corner or small area of a room. The space should be comfortable, or you’ll never go there. Stop any drafts and put in nice bright lighting. If you use electrical equipment, you’ll also need ready access to outlets and you don’t want cords stretched across a room as an invitation for you and others to trip.
Here’s an idea that’s a container and a workspace combined: an armoire or a big spacious wardrobe. One woman uses one large wardrobe to accommodate two crafts: knitting and beadwork.
The magic word for organizing a craft work area is containerize!
