One of the most regularly used rooms in the house, by all members of the family, is the kitchen. Unfortunately it can often be one of the most dangerous rooms in the house too. It contains unattended machines and gadgets such as fridges, washing machines and cookers and also has the added danger of water near electrical items. It is an important room, however, as it is a family meeting place and somewhere where family members gather to eat food.

In many countries the design of the kitchen has to meet local government standards and requires approval for health and safety reasons. A lot of countries make it mandatory to install fire extinguishers within the kitchen and have the ventilation from a kitchen range hood set out in specific ways. Therefore, when designing a new kitchen it is important to take these factors into account.

Many of the kitchen related accidents can be due to the following:

Negligence in the initial design of the kitchen and also negligence whilst occupying the room. Some kitchen appliances may develop faults such as in the cookers, fridges or microwave. Mishandling of potentially dangerous equipment like knives, mixers and ovens.

A disorganized kitchen can be a dangerous place to work in. Risk of infection can be experienced if there are poor methods of food storage, poor drainage systems or bad management of kitchen waste.

To avoid these problems within the kitchen, it is advisable to observe the following tips:

Regularly servicing electrical equipment within the kitchen will keep them safe and working effectively. Food should be handled, stored and prepared correctly ensuring good hygiene. All equipment should be handled with great care and especially kept away from the reach of small children. Installing kitchen range hoods will help maintain good air quality. When not using any appliances it is important to turn them off.

It is important not to leave any combustible materials near heat sources and be careful if wearing loose clothing that could catch alight. Any fires or naked flames should never be left unattended. Having easily accessible exits and installing fire blankets and fire extinguishers will improve safety. Also, young children or infirm elderly people should always be supervised whilst in the kitchen.

These safety measures are quite simple to put into place with minimal expense as well. It is often ignorance and negligence that are the biggest culprits when it comes to compromising safety in the kitchen. It takes a little investment in some items such as fire extinguishers and the expense of regular servicing but is a small price to pay when it comes to the safety of your family.
