We’ve all heard the saying that when we visit beautiful places – we should take only photos and leave only footprints. But that’s not relevant if we’re referring to our carbon footprint, because we want to make as small a footprint as possible !
A carbon footprint is the ‘total set of greenhouse gases caused directly or indirectly by an individual, event or product’.It’s measured in terms of tonnes of carbon dioxide and is the measurement of all the greenhouse gases that we produce through our daily lifestyle through the burning of fossil fuels for heating, transport and electricity.
According to research, each person living in the US and Australia new emits over five tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.Australia has only 0.32% of the population of the world, yet contributes 1.43 per cent of its carbon emissions.
There are so many ways that we as individuals can reduce our carbon footprint and make a real difference to the environment. What we choose to eat, how we get to work, what we throw away to where we buy our ink cartridges, we can all make changes for a better world.
The average Australian home produces around seven tonnes of greenhouse gases every year through domestic electricity use alone. All lights and electrical appliances should be turned off at the wall socket when not in use, and energy saving flurorescent light bulbs should be used.Central heating and geysers should be turned down a couple of degrees, and dishwashers and washing machines should only be run on a full load to save water, electricity and washing powder.
An average car releases over two kilogrammes of CO2 for every litre of petrol used, equating to 4 tonnes of CO2 a year.Walking is the best bet, but otherwise take a bike or take the bus !
Grain and nut foods with the same nutritional value and beef and cheese account for between five and ten times less emissions than beef or cheese production. We can save up to three tonnes of greenhouse gases a year by cutting back on dairy products.By purchasing fresh or dried foodstuffs instead of bottled or tinned options, you will also save emissions because the former is far more energy efficient.
Transporting food consumes significant amounts of fuel, so it is advisable to buy local produce wherever possible.
Reduce, recyle and reuse.  And when it comes to printer cartridges, if you purchase yours online from Earthink, you’ll be carbon clever.Earthink is a web-based supplier of printer consumables and ink cartridges, which contributes part proceeds of all sales to Carbon Neutral, a non profit organisation which plants trees to absorb CO2.Making an adjustment to the way you purchase printer cartridges is a small step, but it can mean a huge step forward towards reducing your carbon footprint!
