As the cost of oil rocketed to nearly $100 a barrel it is not due to a shortage of oil that has people debating alternative energy sources as much as it is the price. When gasoline was under  two a gallon, there was little mention of an energy crisis, but with prices thirty to forty pct higher than that, likewise  the cost of home heating continuing to spiral out of control, an impending energy crisis is still for the most part ignored.

Nonetheless, conservations insist that the current price hikes in many commodities that rely on non-renewable energy for their output will soon be unreachable for  most people as an energy crisis will make it all but impossible to find the materials not to mention having them be affordable. Unless conservation steps are taken, according to many experts, the energy crisis will be the real cause of a real shortage.

Imagine how much money you could leave in the bank if you took energy saving steps to cut just one-kilowatt hour of use for a day. The cost of electricity varies across the nation, but the average price of a kilowatt in the United States in 2007 was $10.61. To better understand what this means, consider a 100-watt light bulb burning for one hour uses one watt hour of electricity. That same 100-watt bulb burning for 10-hours, uses 10 times 10 watt hours, or one kilowatt of electricity.

For decades people have been told of the need for energy conservation and in many areas it’s proven successful. Not only to reduce the emissions of pollutants into the air and the depletion of non-renewable resources, but energy conservation can also help conserve money in the wallet. By reducing the amount of energy being used in a home, for example, the electric and heating bills can be reduced, saving money in the overall family budget.

With just a few simple steps, a family can conceivably cut hundreds of dollars from their annual electric bill and heating costs, while helping save valuable resources. The more energy conservation measures that are taken, the less power they use and less resources will be needed to produce the power. One of the easiest ways to cut energy usage is to always turn off lights when no one is in a room. If that is too difficult to master, motion sensor light switches are available that turn lights on when a person enters the room and turns them off if there is no one detected after a pre-set time.

The use of compact fluorescent light bulbs in place of incandescent lamps can also reduce power as a 40-watt bulb can provide the same illumination as a 75-watt incandescent lamp. In addition to the energy conservation available, these bulbs typically last at least twice as long as traditionally light bulbs, also saving money on the need for frequent replacement.

During extremely cold weather, heavier curtains can also help hold heat in the house as the glass windows can allow heat to quickly move to the outside. Even plastic coverings for windows can help form a barrier to keep the home warmer. When it comes to energy conservation there are many steps a person can take to reduce their individual utility bills while helping conserve precious natural resources.
