Board Up: Protect Yourself and Belongings
As the nation deals with a turbulent economy the city of Kansas City is also dealing with an epidemic not unlike other cities. The foreclosure rate has left many neighborhoods in a state of blight, abandonment and a virtual ghost town of empty homes.
With the foreclosure rate on the rise board up companies are keeping busy. Many board up companies have sprung into the yellow pages as of late. With the amount of foreclosures the bank has to deal with they simply cannot handle managing vacant homes and property. Board up companies are often called for simple projects such as putting plywood on windows and doors to bigger projects like handling the eviction, removing junk and providing security. A vacant house often attracts transients, teenagers looking for new rave spot, and vandals. The cost to keep the property safe can be extremely expensive but one the bank must consider if they wish to keep their investment safe and the neighbors happy.
Because neighbors often get instantly upset when they see plywood on windows and doors banks often use this as a last resort and when they do it is only in high crime areas. More and more board up companies are also replacing plywood with metal strips and decals. The metal strips not only make it nearly impossible to break in there is also less mess involved if there is one.
Many board up companies have begun to make this switch and have been happy with the results. The initial opinion was that it is better than plywood but does resemble a prison. Another alternative to vandalism and theft is finding a board up company that offers security or hiring a security company. What may seem as an added expense can actually be a cost savings. If a break in does occur the cost to make repairs to the house can often be much more than the cost of extreme security.
