When a heatwave comes our way people look for ways to cool down. One of the most popular is to install an affordable above ground swimming pool in the back garden.

But a new study, published by the American Centre for Disease Control, has highlighted the dangers of swimming pool chemicals. Swimming pool chemicals are responsible for as many as 5,200 emergency room visits each year and these are all preventable.

The report highlights a number of common sources of injury including splashing chemicals into the eyes, improper handling, trying to pre-dissolve chemicals and inhaling fumes when opening chemical containers. With adequate knowledge and awareness all of these could be avoided.

Swimming pool chemicals are used to keep pool water clean and safe for bathing. Untreated swimming pool water can harbour potentially harmful microbes that can cause serious illness.

Swimming pool owners need to ensure that they are fully aware of how pool chemicals should be handled, how they should be applied to the pool water, how to test the pool water in order make certain it is safe for bathing and, importantly, how to store pool chemicals safely.

Swimming pool water treatment chemicals should always be stored in a cool, dry, clean and well ventilated space. Containers of chemicals should always be kept away from other containers and must always be located well out the reach of children and pets.

Goggles and rubber gloves are recommended when handling chemicals. Hands should be washed thoroughly after handling and chemicals should always be added to water and not the other way around. Never exceed the stated dosage and make certain that measuring containers are kept clean and dry. Another important point to note is that old chemicals should never be mixed with new, even if they are of the same type.

It is recommended that,if you are new to swimming pool ownership, you receive some instruction regarding how to look after your pool water, apply the swimming pool chemicals and test the water for safety.
