Soap Making Recipes For You
There are different soap making recipes depending on the ingredients and what kind of soap you want to make. And all of these recipes are further divided among the various processes that can be used to create the soap. There are three primary processes involved in making soap by hand, which are the melt and pour method, the cold process and the hot process. Melt and pour soaps are created from the simplest of these, where existing soap shavings or soap chips are melted together and additives, such as fragrance or extra moisturizers and colorings are put into the mixture. This type of soap can be made quickly and is ready to use sooner than the others.
With cold processed soap making recipes, you may still have to melt down any solid ingredients. But these soaps are made with all the ingredients at the same temperature. So if you’ve heated solid oils to melt them, then you would cool the oil mixture with a cold water bath, and possibly heat the soap lye and water mixture with a hot water bath. No cooking is needed however, as is required with the hot process, and once the lye is slowly poured and mixed into the oils, the soap is ready to mold.
With hot process soap recipes, the solid oils are measured and placed in a crock pot, and once melted, the liquid oils are added. Once the lye mixture is ready, it is added directly into the crock pot and whisked as before, without worrying about achieving a similar temperature first. After stirring, the crock pot is covered and the soap cooks for awhile, until it has a clear gel-like consistency and feels waxy when rubbed between the fingers. At this point, soap making ingredients like colorings and fragrances are added. The liquid needs to cool below the flash point of any essential oils that will be put in. And once everything is mixed, the soap can again be poured into molds.
Most soap making recipes follow either the melt and pour method, or the cold or hot process methods. There are other processes as well, such as the one that boils soap in alcohol to make glycerin soap, or the method used to make what is called whipped cream soap. Knowing the three main methods will allow you to create a vast array of different soaps, before you even begin experimenting with other processes. Learning each of the different methods will allow you to expand your repertoire of recipes until there’s no type of soap you don’t know how to create.
